Our Journey
VerdantWnonGypsy was born in 2014 from a collective vision of five passionate environmental scientists and community activists who recognized the urgent need for ecological education and sustainable living practices in Romania. Our founders – Dr. Elena Popescu, Mihai Antonescu, Ioana Dragomir, Alexandru Munteanu, and Maria Constantin – had spent years working separately on various environmental initiatives before coming together after a devastating flood in the Banat region revealed the consequences of environmental degradation.
What began as a small community garden and weekend workshop series in a rented farmhouse quickly evolved as local interest surged. By 2016, with support from the European Sustainable Development Fund and private donors, we acquired 12 hectares of partially degraded agricultural land along Calea Aradului, just outside Timișoara. This became the canvas for our vision – a living demonstration of ecological restoration and regenerative design.
The first three years were dedicated to intense land rehabilitation, with hundreds of volunteers helping to plant native trees, establish water management systems, and construct our first buildings using natural materials. Each structure on our campus tells a story of ecological design – from our straw bale classroom to our timber-frame community center with its living roof. In 2019, we officially opened our doors to the public as a comprehensive eco-education center.
Today, VerdantWnonGypsy has grown into a thriving hub for environmental learning, research, and community building. We host over 5,000 visitors annually through our workshops, courses, school programs, and community events. Our campus now features extensive food forests, experimental agricultural plots, renewable energy demonstrations, and natural building examples that serve as living classrooms for our educational programs.
Looking toward 2026, we're expanding our initiatives to address climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable economic development throughout Romania and Eastern Europe. With each passing year, our community grows, and our impact deepens – demonstrating that ecological living is not just necessary for our planet's future, but a path to more vibrant, connected communities.
